Dollar General Plans $85 Million Distribution Center in Blair
Dollar General announced it will build a $85 million distribution center in Blair to support more than 1,500 stores across the Midwest.
Construction on the 800,000-square-foot facility is expected to start next month. The facility will be completed in early 2020. The company says in a news release it expects to support about 400 new jobs in Washington County.
The facility will be a combination dry and DG Fresh distribution center, which Dollar General says is the first such combination building. It will include about 650,000 square feet of dry goods and 150,000 square feet of fresh goods.
“We’re proud to welcome the first ground-up dual-distribution site for America’s general store to Blair,” said Mike Rooks, director of Washington County Economic Development, part of the Greater Omaha Chamber’s regional economic development team. “Dollar General’s new 85-acre site will be a terrific addition to our local landscape, and we’re excited to send our best workers to fill the more than 400 jobs this outstanding project will create.”
The Greater Omaha Chamber says it believes the facility will add about $106.1 million to the local economy each year, including $53.5 million to Washington County. “This $85 million investment by Dollar General speaks to Nebraska’s business friendliness and natural advantages as a logistics and supply chain hub,” said Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts. “The dual distribution center also adds to the tremendous growth Blair has been experiencing. Thanks to Dollar General for selecting Nebraska to be home to this new facility.”
Mike Kindy, Dollar General’s executive vice president of global supply chain, said the chain looks forward to expanding its mission in the Midwest.
“We are grateful for the continued partnerships with Nebraska state and local leaders,” Kindy said. “We also look forward to welcoming approximately 400 new Nebraskan employees to our Dollar General family soon.”
Dollar General employs about 1,100 Nebraskans at more than 130 stores in the state since opening its first store in Nebraska in 1992. Throughout the country, the company operates 17 dry distribution centers and eight fresh centers, and it is bringing DG Fresh capacity to two of its other existing distribution centers.
Dollar General plans to expand its private fleet presence at the Blair facility. Employees of the distribution center can participate in its free on-the-job fleet training program to earn a Class A commercial driver’s license. Hiring for management positions is expected by summer 2021, with general warehouse and fleet employees hired by fall 2021.
“We’re proud of Dollar General and the partnerships that catalyzed this venture,” said David G. Brown, president and CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber. “The 400 jobs at the project will help support an additional 326 workers in our community, while the local economy will see a boost to payroll income of about $39.5 million. That’s a remarkable testament to teamwork, and we couldn’t be more excited for all that is ahead.”
