What are your connections to the community?
I have strong community roots in Omaha. I was fortunate to be born and raised here. Omaha has given me and my family so much, I have spent my entire career trying to give back. I know the potential of our city and the incredible people who make up our communities. I want to give everyone the opportunities that Omaha gave me.
What experience do you bring to the office?
I have almost two decades’ worth of experience as an Omaha-based community organizer and activist. I have worked with a number of not-for-profit organizations including Sierra Club, Habitat for Humanity of Omaha and now, Inclusive Communities to help address issues and work toward the betterment of our entire Community.
What would one of your top priorities be?
My focus is on what is best for the community and the people of Omaha, especially the most underserved. I believe in order for all of us to thrive, the least among us must thrive. This core principle is what guides my policy priorities of equitable housing, food security, community care investments, and free public wifi.
What motivated you to run for public office?
I chose to run for public office because I have a unique perspective and experience as an activist and community leader that is not well represented on our city council today. I recognized that many members of our community were being excluded from the conversation about the future of Omaha. I want to work to ensure that all Omaha residents are empowered to create a sustainable, equitable and community centered city that will provide stability and prosperity now and meet the challenges of the future.
What’s the biggest issue that Omaha faces?
The biggest issue facing Omaha is the erosion of the social contract and active democracy. There is a lot of distrust in our city leaders because of inadequate policies that failed to both address critical issues and include everyone in the conversation around solutions. I believe that shifting the focus onto democratic participation, community organization, collective responsibility, and fiscal integrity/transparency will help us overcome this issue together.
Is there anything else you want to tell voters?
I would like to hear from you and learn your vision for our city. In order for us to build a thriving and prosperous community, we need everyone to have a seat at the table. Whether or not, I earn your vote, mark the April 6th Omaha primary on your calendar. You can register to vote, find your polling place, and learn more at www.votedouglascounty.com. Everyone deserves the right to have a say in their government. If you can’t vote you can still engage by talking to your neighbors and friends and ensuring that they are informed about the importance of city politics.
