Bellevue – The Bellevue Police Department recently added a new specialized K-9 to its ranks.
The electronic storage device K-9, Quinn, is a 2-year-old black Labrador who is assigned to cyber crimes Det. Roy Howell.
Quinn is able to locate electronic devices that may contain contraband, such as hard drives, USB drives and micro SD cards.
Some criminals, including those involved in child pornography, will hide evidence in storage devices so they can avoid detection. Electronics sniffing dogs can make the difference, as they did in the high-profile arrest of Jared Fogle in 2015, where a K-9 found a hidden flash drive that ended up containing vital evidence.
The department said Quinn is the first known electronic storage device police service dog in Nebraska. In addition to local investigations, Quinn and Howell will be able to assist other area law enforcement agencies.
Initial costs were covered by a local anonymous donor, who made the gift through the Bellevue Public Safety Foundation.
