South Central Bellevue has never been in more need of spots to get good food. There’s no end in sight to the suburban sprawl down west Capehart, and the Waterpark is practically peaking over the southern horizon. The hungry hordes grow by the day! And today’s crowds aren’t just satisfied with the old standbys. Of course, the new McDonald’s is plenty busy, and Lil’ Burro and Filipino Fusion are tried and tested, but what if you’re looking for something new and different? Enter Gyro Kings.

Gyro Kings resides in the space formerly occupied by Sina Way Chinese, located just southeast of 25th and Capehart, directly east of the aforementioned Mickey D’s and at the opposite end of the shopping center from Scooter’s.

Right up front: Gyro Kings is excellent. But I want to take the time to describe why – so let’s break it down. 

When you walk in, the curved counter makes room for folks to line up and order. The open concept kitchen affords you a view of what everyone is doing. Off to the left, there is ample seating, including a big, round table for a larger group.

The staff of young men is hard-working and friendly. They do a great job of striking a fun and effective balance between warmth and “Hey, whattaya want?” 

If you’re looking for convenience, their drive-through setup is rudimentary but straightforward. I’ve had great service through either option. 

Now, for the food! For a place called Gyro Kings, you’d think I’d write about their gyros. But here’s the thing, lots of places do a good, traditional gyro. Gyro Kings is no different. I’ve had their gyros, and they’re excellent. So, if you’re looking for a consistent favorite, that would be great. 

But to me, that’s not what sets them apart. Instead, this place does excellent loaded rice and fries. My favorite is their ‘Combo Platter’. Instead of gyro meat or chicken over rice, you get both! Crazy big portions of beautifully charred, chopped meat over a thick bed of tender, bright yellow rice. But the best part is the sauces. I get both King’s sauces: regular and spicy. Add in the old standby mix of lettuce, tomatoes, and onions, and this is an incredible combination of fresh ingredients bursting with flavor and a nice little kick. 

The ‘King’s Loaded Fries’ are essentially the same as above, but over a bed of crispy fries instead of rice. With ‘super fries’ becoming a mainstay in the quick Mexican food market, this Mediterranean-inspired entry just makes sense, and Gyro Kings executes it with mastery.  

Another thing that sets Gyro Kings apart for me is the overall concept and personality. Where Izmir Gyro House is a traditional Turkish mom’s take on comfort food favorites, Gyro Kings is a new school, bistro bro take on its Egyptian influences. It’s new. It’s fun. And it’s just Americanized enough to draw folks in for flavors that are decidedly unique and different – especially for this part of Bellevue – but a great combo of loud, obvious indulgence.  

So, if you’re looking for dinner for the fam or running out the STRATCOM gate for a fast and easy lunch, Gyro Kings has quickly established their new Capehart location as a legitimate force. The King’s Sauce is the boss, and Gyro Kings’ reign has only just begun.
