Buying her first home on Detroit’s far east side in 2021 was the moment when a lifelong dream finally came within reach for Kim Page.

“I accomplished something that I always wanted to do,” said Page, who grew up in the city. “I always wanted to buy my own home since I was like 18. I never wanted to rent from anyone.”

New Nebraska Law Expected To Lead To More Affordable Homeownership

The Bear Creek residential subdivision is to rise on this roughly 40-acre tract in Blair, Nebraska. Left is Jason Thiellen of E&A Consulting Group who also is president of Welcome Home Coalition, a nonprofit who helped push for the CID Act, along with Blair City Administrator Phil Green.

BLAIR, Nebraska — For about three years, Jason Thiellen of E&A Consulting Group watched client after client turn down the prospect of developing a housing subdivision on a tract of land near the Walmart in this town of about 8,000 people.

At the same time, Blair City Administrator Phil Green was on a mission to spur new residential dwellings that would grow the town and its tax base and keep local workers from living away.

Lawyers And Judges Chime In On The State Of Law

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 06/18/2026 - 12:00am

Somewhere out there, some young boy or girl is driving around in daddy’s souped-up sports car without a care for consequences. It is not an unreasonable imagining, as stereotypes exist (for better or worse) because there are enough people who have known, who feel, or otherwise believe that such a person represented by the stereotype exists. Suffice to say, a young adult who is unburdened by the consequences of his actions, because of the connections or wealth of his parents, is at the least, a fable; one we see often enough in teen movies.

Nebraska’s Once-Controversial ‘500-Mile Sculpture Garden’ Celebrates 50 Years

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 06/18/2026 - 12:00am
“Erma’s Desire,” an abstract sculpture by Johnny Raimondi, was not only the largest in Nebraska’s I-80 Bicentennial Sculpture Garden, but the most controversial. Some saw sexual innuendo in its design; others wondered whether sculptures of covered wagons or cowboys would be more appropriate.

LINCOLN — A collection of outdoor sculptures that stirred criticism and conversations 50 years ago is about to take another ride into the spotlight.

To mark the 250th birthday of the United States, the Nebraska Arts Council is planning a series of events to celebrate the eight sculptures placed at Interstate 80 rest stops as part of the nation’s bicentennial in 1976.

Paving Paradise: Dismantling The US Roadless Rule Threatens To Disrupt Wildlife, Water And Peace In The Last Quiet Places In America

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 06/18/2026 - 12:00am

Pause for a moment and listen. What do you hear? Chances are, somewhere in the background, is the ever-present hum of a road.

More than 4.2 million miles of public roads crisscross the lower 48 states – enough to reach the Moon and back almost nine times. This vast network of roads spiderwebs its way across the contiguous U.S., leaving only about 5% as an inventoried roadless area or wilderness.

5 Ways Data Centers Endanger Their Local Communities And The Country As A Whole

Every internet search, streamed video and AI-generated response depends on a data center somewhere. Driven by rapid growth in artificial intelligence, cloud computing and cryptocurrency, data centers have become the backbone of the modern digital economy. But though their key role is in enabling virtual and remote experiences, data centers are physical buildings in real communities around the nation and the globe.

New York's Busiest Train Station To Get $8 Billion Remodel With Columns, Sunlight And Trump's Name

NEW YORK (AP) — When Manhattan's original Pennsylvania Station was demolished in 1963, it marked the undignified end to one of America’s great public works, a monolithic Beaux Arts train terminal with Roman-style columns and a spacious central waiting area that was at the time the city's largest indoor space.

In its place rose Madison Square Garden — home of NBA’s New York Knicks and NHL’s New York Rangers — while train commuters were forced underground into gloomy, claustrophobic, low-ceilinged corridors when the redesign was completed in 1968.

4.5K Years Of ‘How To Spot A Loser’

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 06/11/2026 - 12:00am

In a big official UFC match or a boxing one, the winner usually takes home a big purse or winnings. Even if it was some type of show match between two famous people, and the more famous guy lost the bout, but took home a larger sum. Some might wonder if it all wasn't staged, and that the real winner was the person who came out richer. Someone who wins it big in the lottery is exceptionally fortunate, and someone else who has a high salary is well-off; but someone who loses all his or her money is a loser. It’s literally in the word ‘loser’: one who has lost.

A Composition of Virtue

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 06/04/2026 - 12:00am

‘Virtus’ is a Latin word built from the root ‘vir’ which means ‘man’, as is in the English word ‘virile’. The Romans used virtus as an ascription to one's “manly excellence’, courage, and worth as shown in public life,” as per etymology.life. It was like a sort of honor that anyone from a citizen to a soldier to an official could acquire through combat or other trials and tribulations. The virtus was a power, or sort of moral authority. Though the English word virtue is closest sounding to its Latin forefather, it also has its roots in the Greek word “aretē”.

Proposed Indigenous Medical School Aims To Boost Native Physician Numbers

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 06/04/2026 - 12:00am

As of 2024, 0.3% of practicing physicians in the nation were Native American.

A proposed Indigenous School of Medicine in Rapid City could help change that.

The school would be the first of its kind in the nation, said Donald Warne, a physician, co-director for the Center for Indigenous Health at Johns Hopkins, and member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe.
