Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 08/29/2024 - 7:00am
In this 1963 photo, Malcolm X attends a rally at Lennox Avenue and 115th Street in the Harlem neighborhood of New York. The Nebraska Legislature on Thursday, March 28, 2024 passed a bill to recognize the civil rights icon every May 19, the day Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1925. The amendment recognizes May 19 as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, Malcolm X Day, to allow Nebraska schools to hold exercises to recognize the civil rights leader.

Every morning Karen Gamble flips on the lights in the old worship hall and glances to her left at a black banner reading: “Who is the most famous person from Omaha, NE?”

She turns to her right in this room of old photos and yellowing newspaper clippings and locks eyes with a portrait of a man staring behind horn-rimmed glasses, pressing a finger to his temple.

Leadership In Nebraska Needs To Rise To The Occasion

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 08/29/2024 - 6:00am

People should not be afraid to call out elected officials from their own political parties, especially when they are out of their depth. So, no matter what you think of any of the property tax plans considered by the Nebraska Legislature, it is clear that Gov. Jim Pillen mismanaged this entire special session from the start.

SD Court Ruling Complicates Carbon Pipeline Company’s Push For Land

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 08/29/2024 - 2:00am

The company trying to build a carbon-capture pipeline through South Dakota has not yet proven it should be allowed to take private land for public use, according to a South Dakota Supreme Court ruling issued Thursday.

Landowners who oppose the project hailed the decision as a victory, but the company expressed confidence it could go back to lower courts and prove its case.

Farmer/Advocate Pitches ‘Regenerative Agriculture’ Practices During Farm Tour

Unlike the clean rows in more traditional cornfields using GMO-modified seed and glyphosate, vegetation is allowed to grow between the rows at Christensen Farms.

LYONS, Nebraska — You don’t notice anything really different about the Christensen Farms as you drive to the farm entrance.

Thick stands of corn, powered by abundant rains in this corner of northeast Nebraska, have resulted in stalks 8 feet tall, swaying in a late summer breeze. No different than cornfields down the road.

Nebraska Got It Right The First Time

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 08/22/2024 - 6:00am

When I was a child I was constantly taught that if you do something right the first time you don’t have to do it over again. I didn’t always listen at first but soon I learned it was much easier to get it right from the start.

But since Governor Pillen couldn’t get it right during the regular session of the Unicameral he has uprooted the lives of State Senators to hold a special session for property tax reform.

SINTRA, Portugal (AP) — The doorbell to Martinho de Almada Pimentel’s house is hard to find, and he likes it that way. It’s a long rope that, when pulled, rings a literal bell on the roof that lets him know someone is outside the mountainside mansion that his great-grandfather built in 1914 as a monument to privacy.

There's precious little of that for Pimentel during this summer of “overtourism."
