UVALDE, Texas (AP) — Police officials who responded to the deadly Uvalde, Texas, elementary school shooting waited far too long to confront the gunman, acted with “no urgency” in establishing a command post and communicated inaccurate information to grieving families, according to a Justice Department report released Thursday that identifies “cascading failures” in law enforcement’s handling of the massacre.

LINCOLN — Local school districts could choose to allow security personnel or other designated employees to carry firearms to enhance security under a proposal introduced last Wednesday.

People often extol the virtue of open-mindedness, but can there be too much of a good thing?
As a college dean, I regularly observe campus controversies about the Israel-Hamas war, race relations and other hot-button issues. Many of these concern free speech – what students, faculty and invited speakers should and shouldn’t be allowed to say.

As we begin the new year and await the announcement from Mayor Jean Stothert on whether or not she will be running for a fourth term, it is time to consider the next mayoral election and what it will mean for the city, especially with Stothert’s streetcar project. With the next election happening in 2025, we have a whole year for campaigning and to see how much Stothert can get done before her term is finished.

LINCOLN — The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services has extended emergency regulations on gender-affirming care for minors that the agency approved after state lawmakers adopted stricter limits on such care in Legislative Bill 574.
The state agency was set to replace those emergency regulations from October with lasting ones as early as this week. However, HHS said it needed more time and extended the temporary regulations through the end of March.
