LINCOLN — Wednesday’s failed attempt to force a floor vote on making Nebraska award all five of its Electoral College votes to the presidential winner of the statewide popular vote signaled dimming prospects this year for changes sought by Gov. Jim Pillen and former President Donald Trump.

Pillen Tax Plan Limps Forward After Sponsor Agrees To Remove Sales Tax Increase

LINCOLN — Gov. Jim Pillen’s property tax plan limped forward Tuesday after its chief sponsor agreed to strip out its most controversial component: a proposed 1-cent increase in state sales taxes.

The bill advanced from first-round debate, 28-12, after lawmakers invoked cloture to shut off a filibuster.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — For the first time in 27 years, the U.S. government is changing how it categorizes people by race and ethnicity, an effort that federal officials believe will more accurately count residents who identify as Hispanic and of Middle Eastern and North African heritage.

Millions of Americans believe that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. They think Donald Trump won by a landslide in 2020 and lost only because of widespread voter fraud. Some of the people who hold these views are my relatives, neighbors and professional associates. Because I reject these claims, it can be difficult to talk to those who accept them.

Biden Says It’s ‘Vital’ For U.S. Steel To Remain Owned And Operated By Americans

U.S. Steel should remain a domestically owned and operated company, President Joe Biden said Thursday, implicitly rejecting an attempt by the Japanese company Nippon Steel to buy the iconic U.S. manufacturer.

Biden issued a brief written statement Thursday morning that did not name Nippon, which announced a deal in December to acquire Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel.

Nebraska is now down to one surgical abortion provider less than a year after lawmakers passed a 12-week ban.

The Bellevue clinic founded by the late Dr. LeRoy Carhart – once one of only three providers in the country to perform third-trimester abortions – no longer does surgical procedures but does offer patients abortion pills, clinic employees confirmed to the Flatwater Free Press.
