From my point of view, it was the best night of the 1988 general election campaign. It was the night of the vice presidential debate. With a single comment, Sen. Lloyd Bentsen, the Democratic nominee for vice president, skewered Sen. Dan Quayle, his Republican counterpart. "I knew Jack Kennedy," he said. "Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. And Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy."

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday shut down a long-shot push from Missouri to remove a gag order in former President Donald Trump’s hush-money case and delay his sentencing in New York.
The Missouri attorney general went to the high court with the unusual request to sue New York after the justices granted Trump broad immunity from prosecution in a separate case filed in Washington.

OMAHA — State Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha has filed to withdraw from running for re-election to his longtime seat representing North Omaha in the Nebraska Legislature.
Chambers, 87, filed paperwork Monday to remove himself from the November ballot, three days before Thursday’s 5 p.m. deadline, Douglas County Election Commissioner Brian Kruse said.

LINCOLN — Lawmakers on Tuesday grilled Gov. Jim Pillen’s pick as the state’s chief information officer, questioning Matthew McCarville’s ability to remain politically impartial in his government role and with staff and potential contractors.
The interrogation came during McCarville’s confirmation hearing before the Legislature’s Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee.
