Pillen Letter To Nebraska Environmental Trust Labeled ‘Unusual’ And ‘Political Interference’

LINCOLN — Members of a watchdog group are labeling a letter penned by Gov. Jim Pillen to the Nebraska Environmental Trust Board as “unusual” and as “political interference.”

Pillen gave final approval in August to an update of the rules and regulations that govern the Trust, which doles out about $20 million a year in grants to environmental, conservation and research groups.

Rosalynn Carter Acclaimed By Admirers For Her Pioneering Advocacy For Mental Health, Caregiving

Former first lady Rosalynn Carter has died, according to the Carter Center, leaving a rich legacy of championing mental health and women’s rights.

She will be buried at the ranch house in Plains she and former President Jimmy Carter built in 1961. She died Sunday just days after the family announced she had entered hospice at the home.

‘Kids Are Gonna Get Hurt’: Foster Care System Breaking Law As Omaha Workers Carry Massive Caseloads

Michaela Kelly, a Millard mother whose three children were placed in foster care, had 12 different caseworkers before her parental rights were terminated in July. In Douglas and Sarpy counties, caseworkers’ massive caseloads often violate state law. Michaela Kelly knew it’d be hard to get her kids back. The 34-year-old tried to chip away at the obstacles — addiction, abusive relationships, mental illness — that led the State of Nebraska to  place her three children in foster care.

Winnebago Tribe To Get Back 1,600 Acres Of Land Once Taken For Proposed Recreation Area Along Missouri River

LINCOLN — The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska stands to receive 1,600 acres of land that was taken a half century ago for a recreation area that never materialized.

The land, on the Iowa side of the Missouri River, would be returned under a bill introduced recently in the U.S. Senate by U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer and her fellow Iowa and Nebraska senators — Pete Ricketts, Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst.

Louise Mabulo, the founder of the Cacao project, called on students to use their voices to advocate for food sustainability on Sept. 29 during the 7th annual Nebraska Youth Climate Summit. 

“Sustainable farming has always existed. It has just been cast aside in the pursuit of fast, easy and cheap food,” Mabulo said.

Brian Jorde said most people didn’t think he or his clients had much of a chance to stop a pair of carbon dioxide pipelines after the plans were announced two years ago.

“‘You all are a nuisance. We all know this is getting permitted.’ That has been the attitude of these pipelines since day one, and here we are,” Jorde said.
