Thousands In Memorial Park Protest Federal Actions As Part Of National ‘Hands Off!’ Protests

OMAHA — Thousands of protesters took to Dodge Street and Memorial Park in a wave of national demonstrations Saturday and a companion protest in Lincoln opposing the recent actions of the federal government with the hope of instilling change locally and nationally.

From an early age in our schools, children are taught about, “Environmental absolutes.” They are not titled so, rather that is a term I have just come up with to better conceptualize their necessity. Trees (especially old-growth trees) provide oxygen to all living things. They provide homes to many small creatures and a plethora of bugs, moss, and vines; as well as maintaining erosion with widespread roots, providing shade and ultraviolet-light protection to that which grows and lives on the ground.

Carolyn Fiscus knows where her aunt, Mildred Lowe, spent her final days.

She knows the 12-year-old Winnebago girl became gravely ill in the winter of 1930 at the Genoa U.S. Indian Industrial Boarding School. She knows Mildred died.

She does not know where her aunt was buried.

LINCOLN — Habitat for Humanity of Omaha calls it the “equity promise.”

It’s new, and essentially a “pay-it-forward” pact in which the nonprofit’s homebuyer clients who receive downpayment and other assistance agree to certain resale restrictions designed to keep a house affordable for generations to come.

Don’t Kill Tenure; Make It Work For Nebraska

Across the country, states like Texas, North Carolina, and Florida have sought to weaken or eliminate tenure in public higher education.

Now, Nebraska is considering Legislative Bill 551, a bill that would abolish tenure at public colleges and universities statewide. Supporters argue that tenure hinders flexibility, protects underperforming faculty and suppresses ideological diversity.

Erin McGuire spent years cultivating fruits and vegetables like onions, peppers and tomatoes as a scientist and later director of a lab at the University of California-Davis. She collaborated with hundreds of people to breed drought-resistant varieties, develop new ways to cool fresh produce and find ways to make more money for small farmers at home and overseas.

Jessie Holmes crossed the finish line at the 2025 Iditarod, a little bit of Teagan Rodrigo was with the champion. The Omaha teen's art was featured on envelopes carried by each of the 33 mushers participating in the Alaska dog sled race.
