Why Only 13% Of Surplus Food Gets Donated By US Supermarkets And Other Retailers To Help Hungry People – And How Food Pantries Are Trying To Gather More

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Wed, 07/08/2026 - 12:00am

Low-income Americans need more help getting enough to eat, but not much of the food retailers that sell groceries could potentially donate is given away. Only 13% of it ends up at food banks, according to a 2026 report produced by ReFED, a nonprofit that studies and tries to prevent food waste.

The rest is composted; turned into animal feed, biofuels and other industrial products; sold at a deep discount shortly before its use-by date; or disposed of in landfills and incinerators.

Cuts For A Cause: Meet The Lincoln Barber Trading Trims For Diapers

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Wed, 07/01/2026 - 12:00am
“Everybody judged me at first,” Lincoln barber Sam Dov said, referring to his effort to swap haircuts for diaper donations. “‘You’re giving two haircuts for the price of one. How’s that work for you?’ And it doesn’t work for me. It doesn’t have to work for me. It works for the community, though.”

The boxes of Huggies and Pampers are piled high next to Sam Dov’s barber chair. He jokes that whenever a new batch arrives, stacking them feels like playing Jenga.

Since mid-May, Dov, who works at Faded Barbershop in north Lincoln, has been swapping haircuts for donations of diapers and baby wipes. The process is simple: Bring in $40 worth before the end of June and get two haircuts in exchange. Dov said the goal is to collect $10,000 worth — or about 250 donations. He estimates that, as of mid-June, he’d collected about 50 boxes.

What 20 Million Bans Reveal About The Strain On Wikipedia’s Volunteers

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Wed, 07/01/2026 - 12:00am
Wikipedia had over 7.2 million English language articles in June 2026.

This year, Wikipedia is celebrating 25 years as the internet’s encyclopedia that anyone can edit. In its first decade, the quirky experiment for passionate nerds exploded in popularity. It became a ubiquitous information resource and a homework helper for schoolkids, much to the dismay of skeptical teachers.

LINCOLN — Judges, lawmakers and Nebraskans representing all three branches of government converged on the steps of the State Capitol Thursday to form a human American flag shaped in the likeness of their home state.

It was a photographic moment — a tribute from folks who run the official seat of state government to the 250th anniversary of the United States and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

In the trailer for “Toy Story 5,” a little girl named Bonnie is playing with her toys when a package arrives in the mail.

She opens it to find Lilypad, a tablet for children.

The iconic toys from the series – Woody, Buzz Lightyear, the Potato Heads, Forky and Slinky Dog – then watch in dismay as Bonnie casts them all aside in favor of the bright tablet screen. Rex the dinosaur exclaims, “What? Extinction? Not again!”

Tyler Free-LaMere, an enrolled member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, stands in front of the Winnebago Public Schools building in Winnebago on June 13. Free-LaMere recently was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts composer award for a composition created for her mother's Ho-Chunk dual-language immersion classroom and inspired by an Algonquin creation story about music.

Sitting on a scorching sidewalk in downtown Winnebago, 7-year-old Tyler Free-LaMere's little hands danced across the black-and-white keys of her miniature keyboard, bringing the symphonies in her head into the world for people shuffling by.

Few on the reservation at the time realized little Tyler was laying the foundation for a groundbreaking future.

More Cuts Could Be Coming To The Agency That Helps Farmers Protect The Environment

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Wed, 06/24/2026 - 12:00am

NEW ORLEANS — River Queen Greens, as the name suggests, lies just outside of the levee blocking the Mississippi River, a 20-minute drive from downtown New Orleans. The farm produces certified naturally grown vegetables to sell to local restaurants and at farmers markets.

But summer is the farm’s off-season, which means it’s time for cover crops. One of the fields has already grown a lush crop of sunflowers that reach shoulder height.

High above an Illinois cornfield, the plane with the “O” on its tail sliced through the cloudy blue sky.

Cullen “Bill” Leitner steered the Cessna 152 and watched the timer. Will Skradski surveyed the landscape below for secret checkpoints, referencing a paper map to track their position.

The duo was tasked with navigating a 125-mile route, unknown to them until shortly before takeoff, without the GPS tools pilots have come to rely on. Every second off schedule and every extra drop of fuel used counted against them.

AI Schools Like Alpha Promise Efficiency, But Can’t Replicate The Messy Process That Helps Kids Learn

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Wed, 06/17/2026 - 12:00am

A child at a playground tries to climb, jump or negotiate with a peer, and their attempt does not work. They fall, get left out of a game or reach another impasse. Then they try again.

Failure, conflict and frustration might look like a struggle, but this is often how children learn.
