Standing before a panel of three judges, Courtney Mascarenas argued that the legal decision against a teenager whose cell phone had been confiscated by a teacher, after assuming a text message was about drugs, should be overturned because it violated the Fourth Amendment of the US Constitution. Her colleague, Hannah Schweitzer, also argued that the school violated his First Amendment rights.

It is hardly breaking news that some areas of Nebraska are dealing with a shortage of attorneys. Some recent reports have suggested that around a dozen counties are without a single attorney based within the county lines.

Chris McMahon isn’t your typical Deputy County Attorney. He recently graduated from law school and became a Deputy County Attorney. But he didn’t begin pursuing his law degree at Creighton University until he was 45 years old – a couple of decades after graduating with his bachelors’ degree from Midlands University. He jokes that he’s a long-term planner.

Denny Sciscoe is an Omaha native who graduated from Burke. He pursued a degree in construction engineering at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. During college Sciscoe worked part time as a pipe insulator around the metro. His decision to pursue construction engineering came from seeing project manager’s pull up to job sites in nicer cars and less dirt under their nails. Before graduating, Sciscoe got a position as a project manager at a local construction company and continued this job post-graduation.
