As the 19th Amendment celebrates its 100th birthday and we celebrate the contributions women have made to society, we take stock of the contributions females have made to the administration of justice in Nebraska. In 1991, the Nebraska Supreme Court created the Task Force on Gender Fairness in the Court. At that time, there were just nine female judges on the bench in Nebraska courts.

The 19th Amendment is extremely straightforward: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”

The Omaha Bar Association’s choice for its community-minded Public Service Award is a true reflection of this year’s Law Day theme, reflecting the centennial of the 19th Amendment.
The 2020 OBA Public Service Award was presented to the Nebraska chapter of the League of Women Voters, an organization rooted in the fight for women’s suffrage in the Cornhusker State.
