Two Judges Join Iowa Business Specialty Court
Two new judges were recently selected to sit on the Iowa Business Specialty Court.
Sarah Crane of Des Moines, Iowa, and Kurt Stoebe of Fort Dodge, Iowa, were named to the court by the Iowa Supreme Court.
They will join Judges John D. Telleen, Lawrence P. McLellan and Sean W. McPartland on the court, which was established May 1, 2013, to move business or complex commercial cases through the court system expeditiously, with lower cost for litigants and using resources more efficiently for the Iowa Judicial Branch.
The business court has been assigned 85 cases since its inception. A news release states that businesses and attorneys benefit from the court’s body of case law that promotes consistency and predictability, while judges benefit from developing substantial experience in the management of complex business litigation.
Crane was appointed a district court judge in the Fifth Judicial District in 2018. She previously practiced civil litigation in Chicago, clerked for Iowa Supreme Court Justice Michael J. Streit and practiced civil and appellate litigation in Des Moines, Iowa.
Crane has served on the Iowa State Bar Association’s Antitrust and Trade Regulation Section. She earned her J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School.
“I found litigating in the business court to be beneficial when I was a practicing attorney,” Crane said in a news release. “I am excited to join the court as a judge to serve Iowans in their more complicated civil matters.”
Stoebe was appointed a district court judge in the Second Judicial District in 2011. He previously served as Humboldt County Magistrate and district associate judge.
He also clerked for Eighth Circuit Court Judge Roy Stephenson, served as Humboldt County Attorney and was in private practice. He earned his J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law.
“I am honored and excited to be selected to join the business court,” Stoebe said in a news release. “I look forward to serving in this important forum, which resolves some of the most complex litigation before us.”
