State Treasurer Named Newcomer of the Year
The State Financial Officers Foundation, a national nonprofit working to educate the public about fiscal policy, recently recognized Nebraska State Treasurer John Murante as the 2019 Newcomer of the Year.
In his first year, Murante helped to pass bipartisan legislation called the Meadowlark Program, requiring that all children born in Nebraska are automatically enrolled in the NEST529 college savings program at birth.
According to Murante’s office, contributions to NEST529 savings plans have risen dramatically since the legislation was passed.
Murante also hosted an event in November called Smart Women Smart Money, a free financial empowerment conference for women of all ages.
“I’m proud of the job my office did last year, and I’m looking forward to seeing our successes in 2020,” Murante said.
SFOF President Derek Kreifels said that Murante’s efforts to improve treasury services are “unprecedented for a first-year state official” and refers to him as a “true public servant.”
