St. John’s Reopens Doors to Red Mass
After last year’s Red Mass was limited to a virtual livestream because of the pandemic, this year Creighton University is reopening the doors of St. John’s Church for the 2021 Red Mass.
The Mass will be held Monday, Oct. 4, beginning at 5 p.m. and will be followed by an open-air reception with cocktails and appetizers in the Jesuit Gardens.
The Red Mass will be led by Omaha Archbishop George Lucas and Creighton University’s president, the Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson.
The annual event invites members of the legal community, including judges, attorneys, law professors and law enforcement and government officials to come together “to reflect on the God given power attached to their office,” according to Creighton University.
The tradition of a “Red Mass” to mark a new court term dates to the 13th century, where it was celebrated prior to opening the Ecclesiastical Courts, according to the university. The name refers to the red vestments worn by the priests to signify the Holy Spirit and the scarlet robes worn by judges and doctors of law.
For more information or to register to attend the event, visit alumni.creighton.edu/news-events/events/red-mass. The university requests reservations be made by Friday.
