Sharp to Serve as Nebraska’s Acting U.S. Attorney
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nebraska will have an interim leader until President Joe Biden names a successor who receives Senate confirmation.
Jan W. Sharp, the first assistant U.S. attorney, was designated last week to take over as acting U.S. attorney upon Joe Kelly’s departure at the end of the month, the office announced in a news release.
Kelly was among the other U.S. attorneys nationwide who were asked to tender their resignation as the Department of Justice undergoes the transition to the new presidential administration.
Sharp’s appointment is effective March 1. Sharp has served in the U.S. Attorney’s Office since 1988 and has worked in the Criminal Division since being hired.
Sharp was named chief of the division in 2001 and was appointed first assistant U.S. attorney by Kelly in 2017.
Kelly served as the top federal prosecutor in Nebraska for more than three years. U.S. attorneys customarily change with new administrations, particularly when control of the Executive Branch changes to a different political party.
The nation’s 93 U.S. attorneys are in charge of prosecuting federal crimes within their jurisdictions.
