Several Last-Minute CLE Opportunities Available
The Nebraska State Bar Association will offer continuing legal education opportunities through the final hours of 2019 in an effort to help procrastinating attorneys fulfill their obligations.
Attorneys with active Nebraska licenses are required to complete 10 hours of CLE each year following admission to the Nebraska State Bar Association. Two of those hours must be in the area of professional responsibility/ethics.
The Nebraska Supreme Court sets other requirements and restrictions in its Mandatory Continuing Legal Education for Lawyers Rule. Attorneys who fail to meet the requirements face a possible suspension of their right to practice law in Nebraska.
Upcoming NSBA CLE opportunities include the following:
• Monday, Dec. 16, Noon to 1 p.m.: “Corporate Counsel Seminar: Hmmm ... I Didn’t See That One Coming” at Hruska Law Center, 635 S. 14th St. in Lincoln. This 1-hour ethics CLE taught by Jon Breuning of Baird Holm LLP will look at the problems with the supervision of nonlawyers, identifying your client, personal liability for settlement and electronics.
• Wednesday, Dec. 18, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.: “The Cybersleuth’s Guide to Investigative Internet Research & How to Research Social Media … Ethically” at Scott Conference Center, 6450 Pine St. in Omaha. Sessions include Effective and Ethical Equal Justice; Procrastination, Perfectionism and Paralysis; Issues and Interactions with Pro Se Individuals; and Common Conundrums for the Casual Collections Counsel.
“If those dates and times don’t work for you, don’t panic,” said Allyson Felt, the state bar’s director of continuing legal education. “You can use the NSBA’s on-demand platform to obtain your distance learning credits.”
A listing of available CLEs is at nebarondemand.com. In addition, the Omaha Bar Association also offers on-demand CLEs at omahabarassociation.com.
Felt cautions, however, that Nebraska attorneys may only claim 5 hours per year as distance learning credits.
Additionally, unlike traditional in-person CLE credits, distant credits can’t be carried over into the next reporting year either.
