Roundtable to Discuss Racial Ethnic Disparities for Youth
A roundtable discussion will explore racial ethnic disparities as it relates to Omaha-area youth.
The public discussion will be Tuesday, Aug. 27, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 7020 Cass St. in Omaha.
The event is co-hosted by Douglas County, First United Methodist Church, Policy Research & Innovation and Operation Youth Success, according to a Douglas County news release.
“This is an opportunity to lessen the tensions among people of goodwill to work on juvenile justice reform and help our kids get out of the pipeline,” said A’Jamal Byndon, Douglas County’s disproportionate minority contact coordinator.
The discussion will include an update to the American Civil Liberties Union’s review of Nebraska school police programs and Legislative Bill 390, which requires standards for school resource officers in Nebraska.
Presenters include Rose Godinez, legal and policy counsel for ACLU Nebraska; Christine Henningsen, project director with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Center on Children, Families, and the Law; Juliet Summers, policy coordinator with Voices for Children in Nebraska; and representatives from the Omaha Police Department and the Omaha Public Schools.
Douglas County hired Byndon in February 2018 to assist in identifying factors that contribute to the overrepresentation of minority youth who come into contact with the juvenile justice system.
Operation Youth Success has a subcommittee tasked with developing strategies to reduce racial disparity at all points in the juvenile justice system in the county.
