Ralston Sports Roundup: Dutton-Burtin Shines for Rams Tennis
It’s a wonderful time of year.
Believe it or not, Week 3 of prep football is upon us, college football is back, temperatures are dropping, and we’re now fully entrenched in the fall high school sports season. For the Rams, it was a busy week highlighted by the first home football game and a jam-packed schedule across the board.
Here’s a closer look at the week that was and what’s coming up for the Rams.
Boys Tennis
Ralston competed in a dual at Beatrice on Tuesday, Sept. 7.
Ralston won four of the nine matchups, including the No. 1 singles matchup where Rams junior K’Sean Dutton-Burtin defeated Beatrice senior Carson Saathoff 8-0.
Dutton-Burtin also had his hand in another Ralston victory as Ralston’s No. 3 doubles team of Dutton-Burtin and Diego Blanco defeated Maddox DeBoer and Tagg DeBoer 8-6.
Also for Ralston, senior John Harrington bested junior Jacoby Hamm 8-4 in No. 3 singles and the senior Blanco defeated Nolan Marlatt 8-3.
Upcoming: A busy week awaits as the Rams are scheduled to play three times this week.
Sept. 13: Ralston at Crete, 4 p.m.
Sept. 14: Ralston vs. Brownell-Talbot (Koch Tennis Center in Omaha), 4 p.m.
Sept. 16: York at Ralston, 3 p.m.
Cross Country
The Rams boys and girls teams competed at the Beatrice Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 4.
Ralston’s boys team finished seventh of eight teams with 105 points, and were led by senior Kevin Santos who finished eighth in 18 minutes, 53.81 seconds.
Norris ran away with the boys team title by placing five runners in the top seven, including the winner Zachary Pittman who finished in 17:50.85
Senior Raquel Skerston earned a top-10 finish for the Ralston girls, crossing the line in eighth place in 21:47.62.
The Norris girls finished first as a team, placing seven runners in the top 10 including the top five. Freshman Kendall Zavala was the winner, finishing in a time of 20:01.69.
Upcoming: Ralston will travel to the Waverly Invitational on Friday, Sept. 17.
Girls Golf
Upcoming: Ralston is scheduled to compete in a varsity invitational on Monday, Sept. 13 at 7:30 a.m. at Stone Creek Golf Course and a triangular against Brownell-Talbot and Duchesne Academy on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 3:15 p.m. at Miracle Hills Golf Course.
Football
Plattsmouth (2-0) rolled to a 55-7 victory over Ralston (0-2) in the Rams’ home opener on Friday, Sept. 3.
Last year’s Class B rushing champ, Plattsmouth senior Christian Meneses had a monster night, rushing 25 times for 300 yards and five touchdowns.
Plattsmouth’s defense held the Rams to nine passing yards and three interceptions.
Ralston senior running back Rashad Madden rushed for 77 yards on 12 carries and scored the Rams’ only touchdown.
Upcoming: Ralston looks for its first win Friday, Sept. 10 at Omaha Bryan (0-2). The Bears lost 21-14 to Omaha Northwest in week one and 42-0 last Friday against Lincoln High.
Softball
Ralston (6-6) went 1-3 over a four-game span from Sept. 2-7.
Sept. 2: Ralston 15, Platteview 2
Sept. 4: Elkhorn 5, Ralston 1
Sept. 4: Hastings 14, Ralston 0
Sept. 7 Blair 10, Ralston 3
Upcoming: The Rams are set to host Mercy/Brownell-Talbott on Wednesday, Sept. 15, and Wahoo on Thursday, Sept. 16.
Volleyball
Platteview edged Ralston 3-2 on Thursday, Sept. 2.
The Rams (1-4) tied the match 2-2 by going to extra points to win the fourth set 28-26, but Platteview returned the favor winning the fifth and decisive set 15-13.
Upcoming: Ralston hosts Seward on Tuesday, Sept. 14 and Plattsmouth on Thursday, Sept. 16. Both games are slated to start at 7 p.m.
