OPPD Announces Next CEO Finalist: Javier Fernandez
The Omaha Public Power District Board of Directors named a finalist to succeed CEO Timothy J. Burke when he retires on July 2.
Although no action was taken during a special closed meeting last Wednesday, Javier Fernandez was announced as the final candidate for the position. The board plans to officially vote on his selection at its next monthly meeting on May 20 at 5 p.m.
Burke has served as OPPD’s president and CEO for the past six years and has been with the public utility for 24 years total.
Fernandez had been the chief financial officer at Bonneville Power Administration in Portland, Oregon, before accepting an offer to become OPPD’s vice president in 2017.
The board made its selection after conducting interviews over several weeks with five internal candidates, according to an OPPD news release. Throughout the process, directors considered feedback from employees and the public about their desired qualities in a utility leader.
“Our stakeholders told us they were looking for a credible, proven, forward-thinking leader with excellent communication skills and a passion for the communities OPPD serves,” Governance Committee Chair Craig Moody said in a release. “Because Javier so clearly met the criteria, we believe he should move forward as the finalist for this important position.”
OPPD Board Chair Amanda Bogner said Fernandez has extensive experience for the role.
“He has served the district well as chief financial officer for the past four years and will serve the utility well in the future of this dynamic industry,” Bogner said.
OPPD will hold a virtual meet-and-greet for the public May 10 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Additional information will be posted at oppd.com.
