Omaha Protest Leader Is Held on $1 Million Bail in Sex Case
An Omaha City Council candidate who helped lead protests that closed a restaurant this summer is being held on $1 million bail on a first-degree sexual assault charge.
David D. Mitchell, 27, is accused of sexually assaulting a minor girl twice in 2014, when he as 21, according to court documents.
He was arrested Sept. 15 and his bond was set Sept. 17. A post on Mitchell’s Facebook page after he was booked into jail, according to the Omaha World-Herald, said “These charges (are) one hundred percent false, the system is finding anyway to take me down. I can’t make (any) comments on the current case for legal reasons.”
Mitchell was one of the leaders of the protest at the 11-Worth Cafe in Omaha this summer over a controversial Facebook post written by the owner’s son. Protesters also objected to a menu item named for Confederate general Robert E. Lee. The cafe closed after the protests.
Mitchell is running next year for the District 2 council seat representing northeast Omaha.
