Novak Picked for Douglas County Juvenile Court Bench
Candice J. Novak will be the newest member of the Douglas County Juvenile Court bench.
Novak was appointed last Thursday by Gov. Pete Ricketts to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Christopher R. Kelly.
The 41-year-old has served as a court-appointed attorney and guardian ad litem in Douglas and Sarpy County juvenile courts since 2005, as well as a guardian ad litem in probate and custody matters in both metro area counties.
An Omaha resident, Novak has operated a solo legal practice since 2010. She previously was an associate attorney at Incontro Law Office and Fournier Law Office. She earned her J.D. from the Creighton University School of Law in 2004 and her bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies from the College of Saint Mary in 2001.
Novak is the state coordinator of the National Association of Counsel for Children, and she was a 2020 co-chair of the legislative committee of the Nebraska State Bar Association’s Juvenile Law Section. Novak is also a co-founder of the Nebraska Guardian ad Liem Project, which works to promote excellence in guardian ad litem advocacy.
Novak is an avid volunteer and active in the community as a member of the St. Joan of Arc school board. She volunteers for the Police Athletics for Community Engagement, Latino Police Officers Association and similar organizations serving at-risk youth in the community.
Novak also works with organizations such as Boys Town, Child Saving Institutes and St. Francis Ministries to provide foster parent education.
