Kuhse Selected to Serve As Interim City Attorney
Matthew Kuhse will be the interim city attorney effective Dec. 12, taking the reins for the City of Omaha Law Department after the retirement of Paul Kratz.
Mayor Jean Stothert named the city prosecutor to the interim role a day after announcing Kratz’s forthcoming Dec. 11 retirement.
Kratz hired Kuhse in 2016. He previously was a deputy Douglas County attorney for 15 years. Kuhse is a graduate of the Creighton University School of Law.
The City Prosecutor’s Office handles the prosecution of Omaha city ordinance violations as well as misdemeanor offenses except for misdemeanor domestic assault cases, which are prosecuted by the Douglas County Attorney’s Office. The city prosecutor reports to the city attorney.
“Matt has broad experience and knowledge,” Stothert said in a release. “He is an excellent administrator and will effectively manage the Law Department during our search for Mr. Kratz’s successor.”
Kratz has been city attorney for 23 years. His role is a civil service position and hired by the mayor.
“This is an honor and responsibility,” Kuhse said. “The attorneys in the City Law Department are my colleagues and friends and we will work together during this transition.”
The City of Omaha will post a job opening for the city attorney position. Candidates will participate in a competitive testing process.
Stothert said in a release that she expects to name the next city attorney in early 2021.
