Kelly Joins Nebraska AG's Office as Criminal Bureau Chief
Nebraska’s former top federal prosecutor will now be the leader of the Criminal Bureau of the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office.
Joe Kelly will provide oversight and direction for all criminal prosecutorial and appellate responsibilities, Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson said in a news release last Friday.
“Joe’s years of experience as a criminal prosecutor will be a tremendous asset to the Nebraska Department of Justice and the citizens of Nebraska,” Peterson said of Kelly.
The Nebraska Department of Justice prosecutes a variety of major crimes throughout the state, including homicide, robbery, sexual assault and child abuse.
Kelly stepped down last month as United States Attorney for the District of Nebraska, a post he had held since 2018. President Joe Biden asked the majority of Republican-appointed U.S. attorneys to step down as part of the usual process of transitioning administrations.
Prior to his federal appointment, Kelly was the Lancaster County Attorney from 2011 to 2018. He had previously served as chief deputy county attorney and a deputy county attorney.
From 1987 to 1990, Kelly practiced law as an associate with Berniger, Berg and Diver PC in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
