Governor Recognizes 42 Organizations with Wellness Awards
Forty-two Nebraska organizations from 24 communities were recognized last week by Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts and the state Department of Health and Human Services as part of this year’s Governor’s Wellness Awards.
Among this year’s Omaha winners are First National Bank of Omaha, Immanuel, Nebraska Medicine, Quality Brands Distribution LLC, Tenaska and the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
“The Governor’s Wellness Award recognizes businesses that have planted and nurtured a culture of wellness within their organizations,” Ricketts said. “I applaud these employers for implementing innovative and effective worksite wellness programs. Their efforts help grow a healthier population in Nebraska.”
Among the outcomes at those employers are increased physical activity, reduced tobacco use, the consumption of more fruits and vegetables and reducing stress.
The awards are in their 12th year. Applicants provide the state with information about leadership, data collection, intervention strategies, policy, environmental support and outcome evaluation.
“Worksite wellness provides an opportunity for employees to invest in their own health and experience the benefits of living healthier lives,” said DHHS CEO Dannette R. Smith. “Embracing a healthy and active lifestyle can help reduce the likelihood of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and certain types of cancer.”
The 23 other communities with employers being recognized by awards are Ansley, Bancroft, Beatrice, Brainard, Chadron, David City, Fairfield, Firth, Fremont, Grand Island, Harrisburg, Harvard, Hay Springs, Hemingford, Imperial, Lincoln, McCool Junction, Mullen, Pleasanton, Sargent, Utica, Wilbert and York.
The wellness awards are given within three categories: the Sower Award for workplaces with established quality wellness programs, the Grower Award for businesses and organizations demonstrating significant improvement in employee health behaviors and the Harvester award for businesses that are experiencing documented value and return on investment.
Including this year’s winners, 466 total awards have been distributed. Awards will be presented at three official award ceremonies: Sept. 12 in Gering, Oct. 8 in Omaha and Oct. 16 in York.
