Google Offers $1M Challenge for 5 Nebraska Nonprofits
Google’s charitable arm will give five nonprofits an opportunity to “Grow with Google” as the company plants roots in Nebraska and seeks to boost economic opportunities in their communities.
The recently announced Impact Challenge Nebraska invites nonprofits to submit proposals for bold economic ideas.
“We are excited to continue partnering with local communities to help grow economic opportunities with the Nebraska Google.org Impact Challenge,” said Dan Harbeke, Google’s regional head of public policy and external affairs. “The state is home to a vibrant nonprofit community with exciting visions for the future. Our hope is to help bring some of these visions to life.”
Nebraska nonprofits are invited to submit proposals to a panel of local judges. Google will select five winners. Each will receive a $175,000 grant and training from Google, and Nebraskans will be asked to vote on the project they believe will have the greatest economic impact. That nonprofit will receive an extra $125,000.
“Building community wealth is key to ensuring all of us can prosper,” Nebraska Lt. Gov. Mike Foley said. “The Google.org Impact Challenge Nebraska is helping drive that vision by investing in innovative ideas and leaders who drive economic growth.”
The local judges are Garry Clark, executive director, Greater Fremont Development Council; Shonna Dorsey, independent talent development consultant; Jane Miller, president and CEO, Gallup Inc.; Owen Palm, CEO, 21st Century Equipment; Yesenia Peck, diversity manager, Nebraska Public Power District, as well as president, Nebraska Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; and John Wirtz, chief product officer, Hudl.
“The challenge will award grants to those nonprofits that are leading Nebraska to a stronger future that makes the good life even better,” Miller said.
Similar challenge grants have been offered in Illinois and Iowa, with current challenges in Nevada and Colorado. Programs have also been offered in several cities.
The initiative was announced at a Nov. 13 “Grow with Google” digital skills training event at the South Omaha Public Library. The Google-backed workshop series is aimed at small businesses, job seekers and nonprofit leaders.
