Girls Inc. Lunch to Feature Stacey Abrams
A prominent Democratic state representative and gubernatorial candidate will visit Omaha as the featured speaker for the 19th annual Girls Inc. Lunch for the Girls next month.
Stacey Abrams, now an author, entrepreneur and nonprofit CEO, will speak at the lunch on Monday, Dec. 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the CHI Health Center.
Abrams served 11 years in the Georgia House of Representatives, including seven as minority leader, before becoming the first black woman to become a nominee for governor for a major party in the United States. Although her bid was ultimately unsuccessful, she won more votes than any other Democrat in the state’s history.
After the election, Abrams launched Fair Fight, a nonprofit promoting fair elections. Abrams has founded multiple organizations supporting voting rights, training and hiring young people of color and tackling social issues at the state and national levels.
Abrams won the John F. Kennedy New Frontier Award and is a director of the Center for American Progress. She is the author of “Lead from the Outside.”
“We are delighted to bring this strong woman who has broken many color and gender barriers in her professional and political life to the Omaha community,” Girls Inc. Executive Director Roberta Wilhelm said in a release. “In preparation for her visit, our girls will learn more about voters’ rights, election security, the importance of being counted in the census, social justice, women’s health, and more. But they will also be excited to learn that Stacey’s leadership and bold style started young. In her, they will see opportunities and pathways for themselves to take part in our democracy.”
Past Lunch for the Girls speakers included Malala Yousafzai, President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Madeleine Albright, Barbara and Jenna Bush, Nicholas Kristof, Donna Brazile and Warren Buffett.
Tickets are $100 per person, of which $70 is tax deductible. Patron seating is $200 per person.
