Fremont Attorney Selected For Sixth District Bench
A Fremont attorney will become the newest member of the District Court of the Sixth Judicial District bench.
Bryan C. Meismer was selected by Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts to fill the vacancy last Thursday, according to a news release.
Meismer, 45, was most recently the public defender for Butler and Colfax counties, where he was handling felony and misdemeanor offenses and as well as child support enforcement matters.
From 2002 to 2018, Meismer was an associate attorney with the Fremont-based Register Law Office, where his practice included civil litigation including dissolutions, modifications and personal injury litigation.
Meismer holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and a J.D. from the Creighton University School of Law.
He replaces former Judge Paul J. Vaughan, who resigned in May.
Meismer applied for the vacancy after a nominating commission couldn’t select a finalist from an initial pool. Eight sought the job in a second round, and Meismer was among two finalists whose name was sent to Ricketts. The other finalist was attorney Matthew M. Munderloh of Omaha.
The Sixth Judicial District covers Burt, Cedar, Dakota, Dixon, Dodge, Thurston and Washington counties. Meismer will be based in Dakota City, Ponca or Hartington, although he would hear cases in Dakota, Dixon and Cedar counties, especially in Dakota City.
