Events Planned to Remember MLK Jr.
The third annual Martin Luther King Jr. Living the Dream social justice music, poetry and dance competition organized by the City of Omaha Human Rights and Relations Department will be Monday, broadcast live from the Holland Performing Arts Center.
The City of Omaha and Douglas County will also recognize employees with their annual Martin Luther King Jr. awards during a ceremony Friday, beginning at noon.
Omaha Police Lt. Sherie Thomas and Douglas County Public Information Officer Leia Baez will be recognized. The Living the Dream Award will be given to Gene Haynes, who retired after 53 years teaching, coaching and being principal of North High School for the Omaha Public Schools.
Nebraska Masks for Medicine founders Holly Murphy-Barstow and Trish Longacre will also be recognized with the new COVID Warrior Award.
The city-county celebration will be livestreamed at humanrights.cityofomaha.org.
In addition, Douglas County Commissioner Chris Rodgers is the keynote speaker at the 2021 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration co-hosted by Nebraska Medicine and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
The event will be held virtually Monday from noon to 1 p.m.

Rodgers, a respected, practical political voice, will address this topic and how a new era of equity and progress can advance in Omaha, Douglas County and the surrounding metropolitan area. Rodgers is vice chairman of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners and president of the Douglas County Board of Health.
In addition, Metropolitan Community College held its 36th annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Thursday. Terri Sanders of the Omaha Star was the mistress of ceremonies.
