ELLICK AWARDS: OBA Lawyer Referral Service Continues Despite COVID-19
This Law Day, three lawyers are being recognized for their contributions to the Omaha Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral Service.
Kelly K. Brandon of Fiedler Law Firm PLC, Elizabeth A. Sevcik of Croker, Huck, Kasher, DeWitt, Anderson & Gonderinger LLC and Keith I. Kosaki of Young & White Law Office are the recipients of this year’s Alfred G. Ellick Lawyer Referral Award for their efforts over the past decade through the OBA’s Lawyer Referral Service.
The service assists the public in accessing legal services by referring callers located in Douglas, Sarpy, Cass and Washington counties to Omaha area lawyers. Callers from other areas or who cannot afford legal representation are directed elsewhere to receive assistance.
LRS clients pay a $40 fee for a 30-minute consultation, which goes directly to the lawyer for their time and advice. The service charges no fee to make the referral.
Cases involving personal injury, worker’s compensation and Social Security Disability pay no consultation fee.
Lawyers receiving clients through the LRS don’t promise to take the case, and clients have no obligation to hire the lawyer. If they do take the case, lawyers charge their typical rates. The LRS is not a reduced fee or pro bono legal service, but the initial consultation typically is well below the rates charged by attorneys in private practice.
The LRS is continuing operations during the COVID-19 pandemic by allowing initial consultations via telephone or video conferences. To join the service, contact Donna Birkby at dbirkby@creighton.edu for an application. Find more details at omahalawyerreferral.com.
The Ellick Award is named after Alfred G. Ellick, who created the OBA Lawyer Referral Service in 1962. The award recognizes a decade of work for the service.
