Douglas County Jail Saw Uptick in Virus Infections Last Week
The Douglas County Jail was experiencing an uptick in coronavirus cases last week among its staff and inmates, but infections remained below the levels seen this past summer.
Since the onset of the pandemic, a total of 164 employees and 100 incarcerated individuals have tested positive for the virus, according to a news release.
Twelve staff members recently tested positive. Ten inmates have tested positive since the beginning of the month, said Mike Myers, the director of Douglas County Corrections.
“We’ve been fortunate to have a very small number of positive cases among our staff and incarcerated population for the past few months,” Myers said, calling the recent cases “concerning” but below the level of August’s viral outbreak.
Four of the jail’s 29 housing units are on quarantine due to positive cases. In August, nine units were quarantined.
“We continue to follow all of the Douglas County Health Department and CDC guidelines,” Myers said in the release. “We are also implementing a variety of tools to combat the virus, which have been purchased with CARES Act funding.”
