Daily Record Decides to Discontinue Ralston Coverage
Sometimes, things just don’t work out.
That’s OK. But it’s still disappointing when the cards don’t quite fall how you’d hoped.
The Daily Record launched an effort to provide weekly coverage to the Ralston community back on June 11. Now, five months later, we’ve decided to throw in the towel.
We started this initiative when we heard about the pending demise of The Ralston Recorder, which had served the Ralston community for 84 years. The company that owned the Recorder — along with The Omaha World-Herald and a variety of other regional newspapers — said it wasn’t financially viable. The paper’s editor, in a article announcing its decision, said that “we’ve also had a change in our readership which has declined significantly over the years.”
It was our hope to find that some of those remaining readers would want to embrace our paper — although it’s always harder to find new customers, and that’s especially true of subscribers in the newspaper industry.
In my own column introducing our brand-new Ralston section, I wrote: “What’s currently missing from our effort is you, dear reader. We need subscribers to help step up and help us sustain this publication so it can become a community service to the residents of Ralston.”
Unfortunately, we still are missing enough readers. We had to face the reality that — while I firmly believe Ralston deserves a newspaper — it was time to make this difficult decision.
The Daily Record still plans to be seen in Ralston going forward, although, truth be told, don’t expect to see us walking in the Independence Day parade. We will stick to our bailiwick covering stories related to the area’s legal and business communities, such as the announcement that Event Vesta was named the Metro Start-Up of the Year by the AIM Institute.
To anyone who has subscribed from Ralston, we would be happy to offer you a prorated refund on the remainder of your subscription. Please give our offices a call at 402-345-1303 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
We wish this community the very best, and thank you to everyone who worked with us to try to make this effort a success.
