Civic Engagement Program Available To K-12 Students Via Bar Foundation
The Nebraska State Bar Foundation is offering a new civics education program called Kids Voting-Nebraska ABC that aims to instill political awareness in young people and increase civic engagement as the children reach voting age.
“In the 2016 presidential election year, 63% of the eligible voting population in Nebraska turned out to vote. While that’s above the national average, the Bar Foundation would like to improve that percentage,” foundation president Steve Guenzel said in a news release. “The goals of Kids Voting-Nebraska ABC are to promote family conversations about citizenship, create lifelong voting habits and increase voter turnout.”
Kids Voting has programs and activities designed for students in grades K-12 and can be adapted for in-person learning, distance learning and home-schooling. Students are divided into groupings based on grade level: K-2 and 3-5 in elementary school, middle school and high school.
Younger students will learn about democracy and the Bill of Rights while older students will participate in mock elections and debates.
The online resources are provided free to school districts, schools, teachers and parents. The program materials can be found at nebarfnd.org/civics-education/kids-voting-nebraska-abc.
The Bar Foundation’s Kid Voting program is an affiliate of Kids Voting USA, a program administered by the Arizona Bar Foundation. Find more on the national program at kidsvotingusa.org.
