Christmas Star at Courthouse Re-lit After Years of Neglect
Columbus – A star that once shown brightly at the top of a Nebraska courthouse was re-lit Dec. 19 after maintenance crews found the star and refurbished it.
The star had remained off until someone found it collecting dirt, sleet, snow, rain and ice on the roof after years of neglect, the Columbus Telegram reports. The courthouse’s lead maintenance worker began work to make the star viable again.
“The lights were dangling off of it, half of the bulbs were broke,” said Gary Speicher. “I brought it down, took the old lights off of it, added some new LED lights onto it (and) put it back up.”
Platte County Emergency Manager Tim Hofbauer said re-lighting the star was a good idea.
“It was one of those holiday spirit moments when we were talking at break and I went, ‘Hey, it would be kind of neat to have a star on the roof,’” Hofbauer said.
