ADL Anti-Semitism Summit Offers CLE Opportunities
The Anti-Defamation League’s Never Is Now Summit will be held virtually this year starting Sunday and running through Thursday, Nov. 19.
The annual ADL summit is the world’s largest on anti-Semitism and hate. It features discussions on a variety of topics, including extremism, online harassment and the renewed need for Holocaust education.
“Anti-Semitism is the canary in the coal mine,” said Gary Nachman, regional director of ADL Plains States/Community Relations Committee, which covers Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas.
“Jews are low-hanging fruit,” Nachman said. “They’re easy targets. Most of your hate groups, extremist groups, are anti-Semitic. The whole idea of QAnon is this cabal of deep state people who control the strings of commerce and the strings of government and they use symbolism that represents Jews. This whole program is really stressing the idea that hate and bigotry comes in many different forms.”
Two of the sessions will be panel discussions that are eligible for continuing legal education credits.
“Double Click on Digital Harassment” on Thursday, Nov. 12, from 1 to 2 p.m., will feature a discussion on online hatred, legal protections for targets, and what can and should be done by tech companies to curb hate.
“Hate Crimes Legislation: Looking Back to Look Forward” is an hourlong discussion focused on identity-based prejudice and why legislation that specifically addresses hate crimes is necessary. “Hate Crimes Legislation” is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 1 to 2 p.m.
The 2019 Never Is Now Summit featured British actor and activist Sacha Baron Cohen, who was presented with the ADL’s International Leadership Award for his outspoken condemnation of bigotry and hatred.
