The fourth annual Lawyers in the City will offer assistance to low-income residents from across the community Friday, Aug. 16.

A one-day legal clinic connects volunteers with walk-in members of the public to seek brief advice, referrals for legal services, self-help forms and other resources.

“This event brings lawyer and nonlawyer volunteers into communities where low-income residents work and live to provide brief, limited advice on civil issues,” according to the Nebraska Volunteer Lawyers Project.

“Meet with walk-in visitors to answer legal questions on family law, debtor issues, landlord/tenant, name changes, powers of attorney, protection orders, small claims, record sealing and set aside, and immigration.”

The clinic runs from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. at the Industrial Training Center at Metropolitan Community College South Omaha Campus, 2709 Edward Babe Gomez Ave.

Lawyers in the City is a collaboration among the Nebraska VLP, Creighton University School of Law’s Milton R. Abrahams Legal Clinic, Immigrant Legal Center, Legal Aid of Nebraska, Midlands Bar Association, Women’s Center for Advancement and the Metropolitan Community College Paralegal Studies Program.

Lawyers can volunteer for the whole day or for one-, two- or three-hour shifts. To sign up, visit nevlp.org/upcoming-events or contact Laurie Heer-Dale at vlp@nevlp.org or 402-475-7091.
