Louisiana Congressional Primaries Are Suspended As A Result Of The Supreme Court's Ruling

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Mon, 05/04/2026 - 12:00am

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana’s congressional primaries won’t be going forward as scheduled in May, as a result of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down a majority Black congressional district, the state’s top elected officials said Thursday.

Gov. Jeff Landry and Attorney General Liz Murrill, both Republicans, said in a joint statement that Wednesday’s high court ruling effectively prohibits the state from carrying out the primaries under the current districts. Early voting had been scheduled to begin Saturday in advance of the May 16 primary.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — The first direct commercial flight between the United States and Venezuela arrived Thursday in the capital of the South American country, seven years after the U.S. Homeland Security Department ordered an indefinite suspension, citing security concerns.

The resumption of a nonstop commercial flight between the two countries comes months after the U.S. capture of then President Nicolás Maduro in a stunning nighttime raid on his residence in Caracas in early January.

OMAHA —  House Democrats’ main Super PAC is bringing more money to an already expensive race in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District. House Republicans’ Congressional Leadership Fund answered with reservations of its own. And both are happening earlier than usual.

House Majority PAC announced plans Thursday to spend nearly $2.9 million on television and digital advertising reservations, essentially reserving ad time and space ahead of time. In 2024, the group spent about $1.9 million in the Omaha market. In 2022, the PAC spent around $660,000.
