BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana’s congressional primaries won’t be going forward as scheduled in May, as a result of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down a majority Black congressional district, the state’s top elected officials said Thursday.
Gov. Jeff Landry and Attorney General Liz Murrill, both Republicans, said in a joint statement that Wednesday’s high court ruling effectively prohibits the state from carrying out the primaries under the current districts. Early voting had been scheduled to begin Saturday in advance of the May 16 primary.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Federal Reserve was one step closer to the job Wednesday after North Carolina Republican U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis cast the deciding vote to advance Kevin Warsh’s nomination to the full Senate.
Lawmakers on the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs voted 13-11 along party lines to move Warsh to the next step.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — The first direct commercial flight between the United States and Venezuela arrived Thursday in the capital of the South American country, seven years after the U.S. Homeland Security Department ordered an indefinite suspension, citing security concerns.
The resumption of a nonstop commercial flight between the two countries comes months after the U.S. capture of then President Nicolás Maduro in a stunning nighttime raid on his residence in Caracas in early January.

OMAHA — House Democrats’ main Super PAC is bringing more money to an already expensive race in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District. House Republicans’ Congressional Leadership Fund answered with reservations of its own. And both are happening earlier than usual.
House Majority PAC announced plans Thursday to spend nearly $2.9 million on television and digital advertising reservations, essentially reserving ad time and space ahead of time. In 2024, the group spent about $1.9 million in the Omaha market. In 2022, the PAC spent around $660,000.

In some years in the United States, politics churn over abortion, and sometimes they boil continuously around firearm laws. This last year has been a wild ride, though honestly, with some confidence, I can say that the two political issues that stand out to the American people the most are immigration and the Epstein files.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — President Donald Trump said Thursday he has ordered the U.S. military to “shoot and kill” small Iranian boats that deploy mines to choke traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump’s post on social media came shortly after the U.S. military seized another tanker associated with the smuggling of Iranian oil, ratcheting up a standoff with Tehran over the strait through which 20% of all crude oil and natural gas traded passes.
