A Nebraska prison inmate sued the state corrections department last Friday, saying she was denied her constitutional right to get an abortion.
A federal judge on Monday granted a request from the woman, identified only as Jane Roe, to have an abortion. The judge ordered state officials to transport her to a clinic so she can get the procedure as scheduled on Tuesday.

U.S. Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska said last Thursday that he believes he had COVID-19 late last year, developing coronavirus symptoms and prompting him to wait at least three months to get vaccinated.
Bacon said in a statement that he was exposed to an infected person and experienced symptoms, but never got tested. He expected to get a vaccine shot and encouraged others to get one as well.

An animal rights group is demanding a criminal investigation because 91 pigs died at a Smithfield Foods plant after being exposed to extremely cold temperatures while waiting to be unloaded from trucks in February.
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals group sent a letter to the Saline County Sheriff’s office on April 1 with a copy of a USDA report on the deaths at the Smithfield plant in Crete.

Eric Dunning has been tapped to be the next director of the Nebraska Department of Insurance, Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts recently announced.
This is a return for Dunning, who worked as an attorney at the department for 15 years before joining Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska as the insurance company’s director of government affairs in December 2013.
