A Douglas County judge has dismissed cases against 25 people who were arrested and jailed for blocking traffic at a bridge during a summer racial injustice protest in Omaha.
Douglas County Judge Marcena Hendrix ruled last Wednesday that Omaha’s ordinance prohibiting the obstruction of a highway or street is “overly broad” and “clearly regulates protected speech.”

Papillion – A 23-year-old man charged with fatally shooting two employees at a Nebraska fast food restaurant and wounding two others was denied bond last week at his first court appearance.
Roberto Carlos Silva Jr. faces two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder and other charges in the Nov. 21 attack at a Sonic Drive-in restaurant in Bellevue.

A new law that became effective earlier this year eliminated property tax provisions related to notice of preliminary valuations.
Legislative Bill 1107, signed this summer by Gov. Pete Ricketts, eliminates the Personal Property Tax Relief Act beginning in tax year 2020, Douglas County Assessor/Register of Deeds Diane Battiato said in a news release.

Papillion – Sarpy County plans to put up a permanent memorial for two young boys who were brutally murdered in 1983.
The memorial for Danny Joe Eberle and Christopher Walden will serve as a reminder of their lives and represent the county’s commitment to seeking justice for crime victims, the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office said Nov. 23.
