Designed to hold 148 inmates – including eight women – the Sarpy County Jail was built in the late 1980s and has been operating at capacity since the 1990s.
The facility has recently been averaging 220 inmates a day, county spokeswoman Megan Stubenhofer-Barrett said. But a new facility promises to expand jail capacity to about 400 in Nebraska’s fastest-growing county.

Lincoln – Nebraska received its first shipment of the new coronavirus vaccine on Monday and expects to get more than 100,000 doses this month to treat front-line health care workers, state officials said.
Dr. Gary Anthone, Nebraska’s chief medical officer, said the initial shipments had arrived at two hospitals as of mid-morning.

Delays in the construction of the $120 million Douglas County Juvenile Justice Center, as well as improvements related to air quality standards following the pandemic, appear to have resulted in a higher price tag.
The Douglas County Board of Commissioners will consider a proposal Tuesday morning to add $10 million to the project, which has faced legal challenges and efforts to prevent its progress.

A woman killed in an Omaha house explosion had filed a protection order against her 28-year-old grandson a day before the explosion, saying she feared the man would harm her and “start my house on fire,” court records show.
Omaha fire officials identified two people killed in the blast last Tuesday morning as Theresa Toledo, 73, and Angela Miller, 45.
