The Justice Department today announced guidance to help law enforcement agencies (LEAs) recognize, mitigate and prevent gender bias and other biases from compromising the response to, and investigation of, sexual assault, domestic violence and other forms of gender-based violence.

When Rep. Sonny Bono died during a family skiing trip in 1998, filling his California congressional seat was the last thing his wife, Mary Bono, was thinking about. She was grieving and had a 6- and 9-year-old to care for. But within days, Republican leaders — including former President Gerald Ford, former Vice President Dan Quayle and then-Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich — reached out, encouraging Bono to carry on her husband’s legacy.

The Nebraska State Bar Association works for Nebraska lawyers to help us achieve the highest standards of competence, ethics, and professionalism and to protect and promote the administration of and access to justice. In my last President's Page, I wrote about the NSBA's efforts to effectuate that mission through our legislative advocacy. In addition to participating in the legislative process, the NSBA also advocates by petitioning the Nebraska Supreme Court for rule changes that it feels are important.

For more than twenty years, providing Nebraska lawyers with access to affordable legal research through Casemaker was an important way that the NSBA supported its members. In 2021, we were surprised when Casemaker announced that it had been acquired and was merging with one of its competitor platforms, Fastcase. With no alternative legal research engines operating in the association space at that time, the NSBA began the work of transitioning our membership from Casemaker to Fastcase.

FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) — Authorities are searching for an "extremely dangerous" murder suspect who escaped from an Alabama jail and the official they believe may have helped him to escape. The inmate, Casey Cole White, 38, was scheduled for trial next month on a capital murder charge. Vicky White, the assistant director of corrections at the Lauderdale County jail, told co-workers she was taking the inmate to the courthouse for a mental health evaluation.

The Justice Department announced today that the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) and the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) have released over $320 million in grant solicitations for programs that advance community policing, keep school students safe, and combat the production and distribution of illegal drugs.
